GREENSBORO, N.C. - Philanthropist Michael Steinhardt recently donated $5 million to the American Hebrew Academy, one of the largest single gifts in the Academy’s history. The funds are earmarked for the school’s endowment fund. The announcement was made today by Glenn Drew, Executive Director of the Academy.

A legend on Wall Street, Mr. Steinhardt was one of the first hedge fund managers and a pioneer in the industry. An active philanthropist and chairman of the Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life, Steinhardt is perhaps best known for founding Taglit-Birthright Israel, a program that has enabled more than 200,000 Jewish young adults to travel on a ten-day trip to Israel, absolutely free. He is passionate about education, donating funds to support various Jewish and secular institutions, including one at New York University which bears his name.

Steinhardt is a strong supporter of the Academy, and has been since its inception.

In addition to Mr. Steinhardt’s generous gift, the Sabbah family donated one million dollars to the Academy’s endowment fund, building on family patriarch and Academy founder Chico Sabbah’s commitment to AHA’s future.
