Notable Academy of Women members include: Elaine Marshall, N.C. Secretary of State; N.C. Governor Beverly Perdue; Dr. Maureen Hartford, president of Meredith College; and Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson, among many other inspirational leaders. Notable Academy of Women members who passed away this year include: Kay Yow, Elizabeth Cofield, Beth Cummings Paschal, and Dorothy Austell.

The YWCA unites women and men who strive to improve the social and economic conditions that affect girls, women and their families. Established locally in 1923, YWCA programs are represented through four core initiatives: Women’s Economic Empowerment, Racial Justice, Youth Development, and Health and Wellness. As a private, nonprofit organization, the YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.
